On Sunday we had the final curtain for the first station of the Greek League with the semi-finals and finals being held in Holmes, which was full of spectators. After many games the previous days, a lot of sweat, nice fights and surprises, we reached in the morning semi-finals. In men, the result was 3-1 between Leontarakis and Tzamaloukas in favour of the first, with Tzamaloukas playing a good game with nice points and great rally (as we have been used to), but his rival’s excellent physical condition didn’t leave any room for something more. In the second semi-final, Kargiotis prevailed over Nikos Moustroufis, beating all rivals up to that round, clearly proving the high level at which he remains even now. we cannot omit spectators’ admiration and comments among which:… “this game is like reading instructions for proper squash learning…”.
In the big final, Leontarakis beat 3-1 Kargiotis in a great game of very high standards, FAIR PLAY and a clearly sports game from both players.
In women, in the semi-finals, we had the first couple Chaliassou-Spartali, with the first prevailing over the second with 3-0. Both players found themeselves in the semi-final after great wins in the round of 8. Spartali, due to a twist from 2-0 won Lambrinakou with 3-2, while in the big fight of Chaliassou-Tomazou, Chaliassou won 3-1 with great difficulty. The game was very marginal in the 2nd and 3rd game, with Chaliassou winning both in the tie break with 12-10, resulting in the 2-1 and acquiring great psychologicallead for the 4th and the final win. In the second semi-final, Kargioti won Ladaki, as it was expected, with 3-0 score, despite Annita’s dutiful efforts, who, besides the racing part, she had to run the tournament.
In the big final, Kargioti prevailed over Chaliassou with 3-0 (in her first final in a tournament). It would be advisable a professional player who participates in many PSA tournaments, to participate in men’s board as well, so as to play competitive and tough games as they are the only tools that will help her abroad. (Zeta’s withdrawal necessitates such development). For the first time in the finals, all finalists were under 30 years old, a fact that is very promising.
In plate categories, Vogiatzaki was the winner in women and Kontaroudis and Pitsos in men’s categories.
Despite the big board and many games, the tournament rolled smoothly and the effort that the whole PEFT put, deserves congratulations. All of us saw the whole Board of Directors sitting on a chair, holding a laptop, coordinating games.
Amanand from Holmes’s side should also be given congratulations for the excellent organisation.
The second round of the League is in 2016, so till then, everyone’s big target is the Panhellenic Championship and its preparation.
Meanwhile, an arbitration seminar took place with Mr. Petropoulos being the lecturer. Gongratulations to our national referee!
Greek League 2015 ,1rst round HOLMES PLACE by Mike Veros
Commencement for the Greek League this weekend with the 1st out of 6 races taking place in Holmes premises in Marousi. The players’ desire for competition is clearly reflected in the participants’ number which is 18 in women and over 100 in men. These fighures are usually seen only in a Greek championship. The existence of 3 squash courts in Holmes will certainly make everyone’s life better in order to complete a very loaded in terms of race schedule. Among the participations, it is worth mentioning the one of the everlasting Nikos Moustroufis, who, after a long time, will give us the pleasure to see him fight and prove that age is something very relevant as far as an athlete is concerned. Big fights are expected as the Greek champions Harry Londy and Petros Tzamaloukas, whom we haven’t enjoyed for a long time, are among the participants as well as most best players from Greeece.
The games will be many, so it would be best if all of us are consistent with the racing schedule for our better facilitation. Apart from your racquets, bring all together your cheerfulness since this is where the essence lies. The more we gather and compete, the better chances and time we give to the young generation to come closer to our favourite sport so that there is a continuation in the Greek squash.
